Frequently asked questions

Does a Japanese passport photo need a pure white background?

Yes — MOFA specifically requires plain white; off-white, which some other countries accept, is not accepted for Japan.

Can I wear glasses in a Japanese passport photo?

Only prescription glasses with both eyes clearly visible and no glare. MOFA recommends removing them entirely if you can see well enough without them for the photo.

Can I print a Japanese passport photo on regular home printer paper?

No — it must be printed on professional matte or glossy photo paper; standard home-printer paper is rejected.
