Frequently asked questions

Can I take my own Canadian passport photo at home?

No — unlike many countries, Canada requires the photo to be taken and stamped by a commercial photographer or studio. A self-taken or self-printed photo is rejected regardless of how well it matches the size and background rules.

Why does my Canadian passport photo need a stamp on the back?

IRCC uses the photographer's stamp — name, studio address, and date — as a fraud-prevention measure. It's unique among major passport authorities and applies to every printed application.

What's the difference between the Canada passport and Canada visa photo sizes?

The passport uses 50×70mm with room for shoulders; the visa (TRV) uses the smaller ICAO-style 35×45mm format. The two are not interchangeable.
